The story revolves around Sedaris, starting from his unusual upbringing in Raleigh to his college years and to his wandering as an adult. One of the most somber pieces in the book is the story titled Ashes. This piece recounts the death of Mrs. Sedaris and the marriage of Lisa. Mrs. Sedaris dies of cancer, and the whole Sedaris family does not seem to be affectionate. Her children are careless and hardly pay any attention to the sufferings of their mothers. However, Mrs. Sedaris wants them to understand the meaning of life because she knows that her life would come to an end and that once she dies, no one would teach her children the manners or etiquettes. There are various incidents in this story that reveal that Mrs. Sedaris is worried about the future of her children as well as about their safety and security. Just like any other mother, she wants to bring prosperity and comfort to their lives, but it is quite challenging for her.
