1. What do we mean by the Baroque tradition in secular music? Name three or four of the outstanding composers of this tradition.
The secular music is a prominent genre of Western music that dominated the world along with sacred music in the Middle Ages and Renaissance era. The secular songs were primarily written in Latin language and sung in vernacular language. This form of music was influenced by a lot of traditions and cultures, including the baroque tradition. The baroque style was originated in the 16th century in Italy and spread across Europe by the 18th century. It was used as an expression of Catholicism and brought various changes in both secular and sacred forms of music. The most prominent composers of this tradition were George Frideric Handel, Johann Sebastian Bach, and Antonio Vivaldi.
2. Which important musical forms were developed in the eighteenth century?
The proper perception of a music form depends on one’s creative skills and mental capabilities. In the 17th and 18th centuries, music used to be simple yet impressive. There were no sophisticated, structural units that could complicate things. Music tones used to be organized with a few strokes of the bow. In the 18th century, the melody was considered a significant form of music that consisted of a succession of phrases. All of the phrases were connected with one another or grouped together as antecedent. In those days, most of the music forms were both addictive and hierarchical: phrases were conjoined in order to produce unique melodies, which were then used along with other forms of music to leave a good impression on the minds of listeners.
3. Identify the essential differences, in action and sound, between the harpsichord and the organ.
The harpsichord and organ are two string instruments, mainly used in orchestral opera and music. There are a lot of differences between these two instruments, but the main difference is in the way they are played and their strings are used. In the organ, hammers are primarily used for striking the strings, but in a harpsichord, the strings are plucked to create different sounds and tones. In terms of their history, the harpsichord is older than the organ and was mainly used in music circles. The sounds produced by the organ differ from the sounds of a harpsichord. An organ player, just like the piano player, can fully control the volume of sounds produced. But a harpsichord player cannot do anything like that, meaning he has to restrict himself when it comes to selecting between loud and soft sounds.

French composers Rameau and Lully devoted a large part of their lives to music. It is because of them that French opera has become the most influential and powerful operatic tradition of Europe.
