Music and Dance
Music and dance are essential in everyone's life. My interest in watching the migration concert was as a result of my desire and passion for music alongside other performing arts. I have a valid reason to believe that, music is the one thing that never dies. Music has ever evolved from history to present day, and much more music will be necessary for the future. I have a dancing talent and would always seek a chance to perfect my skills. The faculty showcase was, therefore, an ideal event for me to learn new dance styles to be able to appreciate the different moves within the genre. ‘Migrations,' the fall faculty showcase was performed by students from Queens College, from the department of drama, theatre and dance (Fitch, 2016). It was directed by Richard Move and presented at the Kupferberg centre for arts found at Queens College. With the aim of showing the themes of migration, exile, and transience, the play took place on the November 30 at 1 pm.
The dance was choreographed such as to present different qualities of moves, accompanied by various gestures. Both the swing and the percussive movement qualities were presented in the dance, a clear indication of how the choreographer tried to match the movements with the theme of the presentation. The dance styles resembled movements or rather migrations (Fitch, 2016). The dancers portrayed gestures such as forward folding of fingers, a symbol of matching; they would at some points kneel, describing the pauses that occur during a migration event. Their eyes would express a sign of sigh, a clear indication of the surprises that may arise during migration (Fitch, 2016). The visual effects had a significant impact on the dance and the overall performance of the particular theatre art. Jeffrey Greenberg’s lighting design was in unison with the costume design by Whitney Locher, and they brought out the ambiance of the performance. The colorful lighting magnified the choreographed moves (Hickey, 2002). The costumes were in such a way that all the dance moves could be articulated, and the dancers had a sense of comfort. The musical beats and rhythm were such that the dancers could not miss the actual steps (Hickey, 2002). Relating the theatrics performance with my experience in class, I realized that achieving the best performance in music and dance requires harmonization of different elements such as the choreography and the visible effects (Hickey, 2002).
