Martin Luther King in “The Drum Major Instinct” cautions that nations struggle and the desire for supremacy is an obstacle to justice and social development. In the Christian sermon during the Christmas season, Dr. King focuses on the request of James and John to Jesus who wanted to be in glory with Jesus and Jesus urged them to be servant leaders. To King, service and giving back to the community are empowering and Christians should follow this to be more impactful and have a positive influence on people. Service represents greatness since people are full of grace and show love without expecting anything in return.
King challenges the notion that countries are great because they wield power and influence yet are not committed to supporting truth and justice. “And I would submit to you this morning that what is wrong in the world today is that the nations of the world are engaged in a bitter, colossal contest for supremacy” (King). The aggressiveness of the United States and her allies may have worsened violence even as they invoke peace and when there is blind support for the oppressors there is widespread injustice.
