After years of fighting crimes, law enforcement officers are looking for ways in which they can be more proactive rather than reactive when it comes to dealing with crimes. Philip Dick’s “The Minority Report” is one of the texts that address how law enforcement can prevent crimes through the use of precogs who have the ability to see the future and predict when and how crimes will occur. I think that the use of technology to prevent crimes is a major consideration currently in the United States where police are using software to analyze existing data and predict possible crimes, especially in major cities. Cities such as Chicago have been said to benefit from the use of technology in the prevention of crimes (Coats, 2018). The only difference is that instead of using actual people with psychic abilities like in the minority report, police are relying on technology.
Dick’s text is based on the concept of prevention of crimes before they occur. The use of three precogs who have precognitive abilities has helped in the reduction of crimes. The head of Pre-crime, John Anderton, reveals that the last murder occurred about five years ago, indicating the effectiveness of the program. However, things take an ugly turn when Anderton name comes up from the precogs, indicating that he will commit a murder in a week’s time. He tries to escape, although at first, he thinks that the predicted murder will be of his new assistant, Ed Witwer. However, he learns that he is meant to kill Kaplan, who intends on taking down Pre-crime. After he is discovered, he realizes that failing to kill Kaplan will indicate that Pre-crime is wrong and the Senate will dismantle it. As such, he ends up killing Kaplan so as to save P...
