Cognitive changes are common in middle adulthood. Many individuals this age become experts in their occupations or in a particular area of study. Cognitive development in middle adulthood mainly stems from life’s challenges that force people in this age group to learn new ways of coping to maintain a healthy lifestyle (Lewis et al., 2017).
One of the main cognitive changes that occurs during middle adulthood is general intelligence. The mental abilities that make up general intelligence include verbal memory, vocabulary, spatial orientation, numerical computation, perceptual speed, and inductive reasoning (Baghel et al., 2019). Various studies have shown that these abilities peak during middle adulthood.
Another cognitive change in middle adulthood is increased stress. Stress slows down cognition making it hard for individuals of all age to think clearly. In middle aged adults, stress increases harmful behavior such as alcohol abuse and poor eating habits (Baghel et al., 2019). People cope wi...
