In Mexico, maize is more than a crop. It is a cultural symbol. Corn became a domestic crop for the Meso-Americans approximately 10,000 years ago. To date, it is referred to as the greatest agronomic achievement. Today, corn is grown all over the world. However, the yellow corn that is mostly grown in the United States (U.S.) is pale compared to the traditional maize variety grown in Mexico. Corn is intimately tied to the lives of the indigenous people of Mexico. It was the basic grain that shaped their daily meals and influenced the timing of festivals. The shape and image of corn grain are also instrumental in crafts and architecture among Meso-Americans. According to Mexicans, corn is so important because it allows people to live in peace. Also, because it is a form of food security. Among Mexicans, corn is essential to survival. During times of disaster and economic turmoil, stored corn can be used to feed families. For the last five centuries, Mexicans have withstood great suffering, but corn has enabled them to survive. However, the significance that corn holds to the people of Meso-America is being threatened by the U.S. through its yellow corn production. To address this threat, the Mother Seeds in Resistance project was established to identify seeds that would be preserved and frozen.
