A recent survey by the Arizona School Personnel Administration Association (ASPAA) demonstrates that teacher shortage is a major problem in Arizona. The data shows that about 25% of the teacher vacancies in the state are yet to be filled. About half of the teachers that fill these vacancies do not meet the certification requirements of the state. Teaching is a labor-intensive profession that demands schools to have more teachers. With more teachers leaving the profession or moving out of the state, more schools are have been left without the required number of teachers.
The problem of teacher shortage is not new in Arizona. According to the same report by ASPAA, teacher shortage in the state has been a problem for the last four years. With fewer teachers, students in the state are unable to receive a quality education. The shortage causes Arizona students to remain behind especially in science and math compared to the students in other states. For instance, there are 150 certified physics in the state which has negative implications on STEM subjects. The teacher shortage has adverse effects on the students and the future of the state.
The Universal Declaration of Human Rights guarantees the right to education. Furthermore, UNESCO indicates that the right to education is required to prepare students for the future life of freedom.
