Learning disabilities can offer resistance to the achievement of organizational goals. One particular learning disability that appears to be problematic to many organizations is one that Senge describes as the enemy is out there. This particular disability stems from the belief in one’s position to a point where a person is blind to the effects of their actions. One particular organization that suffers from the above is Amazon. Amazon has created a culture that forces its employees to compete with each other. Kantor and Streitfeld (2015) wrote that at Amazon, employees are asked to oppose their colleague’s ideas, and the expectation is one has to work long and late. The goal, as they say, is to make sure one appears ahead of their colleague during review or evaluation. Secret feedbacks are also common and Kantor and Streitfeld (2015) write that these are often used to sabotage others.
At Amazon, this disability manifests in the way the employees see each other as enemies and not as colleagues. Their goal is not to enrich their fellow employees but to ensure that they appear more focused and successful than them. Senge (2010) writes that “when we focus on our position, we do not see how our own actions extend beyond the boundary of that position.” At Amazon, the above unfortunately fits quite well.
