Key Psychosocial issues with the condition of frailty
A physiologic/biologic perspective of frailty condition has been researched extensively, although frailty is a multi-dimensional condition and includes the psychosocial domain. A discussion of frailty would not be complete without considering the psychosocial aspects of an individual’s interactions with her/his environment. This is primarily because psychosocial aspects of frailty are important in determining the impact of disability and illness on the patient and his/her family. Not only do psychosocial aspects/factors of frailty predict adverse outcomes, such as death, in older adults, but also most of these factors are modifiable/adjustable and they could be targeted in intervention programs (Robinson, Wallace & Wu, 2011). The main psychosocial factors that determine adverse outcomes particularly for elderly people range from patient factors such as depression to caregiver problems and housing conditions.
