Jean-Paul Sartre is recognized for writing plays that constantly challenge human existence, and such issues can be perplexing and challenging to understand for a narrow-minded reader or listener. This essay will focus on a play he wrote called No Exit (Huis Clos), which delves deeply into human life and behavior. The narrative indicates that hell is created by the people surrounding each other rather than God, which is accurate because our situation on Earth can sometimes be described as hell.
In Sartre's play, it was shown that the characters in the essay were condemned to the same room in hell where they had to reflect on their own selves by admitting what they did to others. Although Sartre's conception of punishment defies the common notion of what hell is, the story's narrative shows that the damnation of the characters, in relation to their backstories, was enough to be considered a punishment for their transgressions in life.
