A notable problem with listening illustrated in the video has to do with the law of closure. When engaged in verbal communication, it is impossible for an individual to provide or receive all the required information. Thus, as sender or receiver, the individual tends to make some assumptions on what is being said based on factors such as the other participant, the content, or the context. When a certain element of the message is missing, the person instinctively fills in with information based on his or her own experiences.
Another listening problem noted is caused by distractions. For a person to listen effectively, he or she needs to focus on what the other participant is saying, or not saying. Certain distractions, such as a ringing telephone or doorbell can prevent the individual from completing this task effectively. A distraction makes the person miss a crucial element of the message being delivered.
