Irregular Warfare: A Reflection Journal
The enterprise of war is as complex as human nature is. To go to war means, among many things, is to change course into highly, if at all, predictable unfolding events. Moreover, war comes in all possible shapes, scales and spans. In more recent seminars, I have come to study irregular warfare in more depth. Learning about irregular warfare is, in fact, an eye opener not only to Marine-related knowledge and skills yet, perhaps more importantly, lifetime lessons applicable to possibly many personal and professional life contexts. The irregularities of irregular warfare, compared to so-called conventional warfare, is, more specifically, a clear example of situational leadership capabilities a Marine should develop in battlespace and in unconventional civil operation environments. To put matters into a more personal learning context, I revisit some major takeaways I have come to learn from studying irregular warfare in order to showcase possible practical applications in personal and professional life.
In irregular warfare, as in all wars, constants prevail. If anything, collision of opposing wills is a war constant. To win, breaking enemy’s will is indispensable. Similarly, irregular warfare, despite occurring along unconventional warfighting lines and at varying scales, is about breaking an enemy’s will in and beyond battlespace using different strategic and tactical methods. In so doing, I understand irregular warfare is a masterful orchestration of battlespace and civil knowledge and capabilities to achieve a series of objectives leading up to an ultimate goal of victory. In a personal context, I strongly believe adapting to different military and non-military situations is a major lesson I can say I am now app...
