Iraqi claimed Kuwait was part and parcel of Iraq. After gaining independence in 1932, Iraq with immediate effect declared that Kuwait was now a territory of Iraq and therefore Iraq had a right to it. This was because previously area coverage of Kuwait had been its territory until British created Kuwait as a state after World War 1. In 1990, Iraq was in massive debts, and a significant portion of it was owed to Saudi Arabia and Kuwait. Iraq had pressurized Kuwait to forgive and pardon them of the debt, but Kuwait refused, and so Iraq invaded Kuwait to prevent from seeking their money back (Mearsheimer & Walt, 2003).
