Part 1 – Summary
Friesen and Keeney’s (2013) “Internationalizing the Canadian campus: ESL students and the erosion of higher education” published in University Affairs is of the opinion that internationalizing the Canadian campus erodes the quality of higher learning to the detriment of all stakeholders. The authors argue that ESL postgraduate students fail to adapt to the rigorous of the university classroom since they gained admission with mediocre or poor previous academic performance. This situation is exacerbated by the students’ poor cultural preparedness; common cultural and historical understanding is a fundamental underpinning of the rigorous graduate discussion. Mixing ESL students with the rest derails the learning process as the instructor has to simplify the learning content to suit the needs of the foreign learners, no to meet course objectives. Therefore, Friesen and Keeney conclude that admission of ESL students should be discouraged because its ramifications on Canadian students and institutions outweigh its financial benefits.
