I am confident that all of us had plenty of times in our lives when our brilliant and infallible ideas are rejected, tabled, or denied for one reason or another. Perhaps, it is because you presented it in a very boring way that your boss did not even consider it, or you just didn't make it convincing enough for your junior high teacher to even consider giving it a second thought. Well, we have to admit that some messages are more engaging than others. Remember the times when you were bored in a class lecture or those instances when you are persuaded with a motivational speech. What we have to remember is that to convey a convincing message one has to have the right mix of factual information, contextual regard, and emotional delivery. Below is a sample of a time when an idea was disregarded despite its inherent soundness and its appeal to the emotion of the masses.
Problems on the act of persuasion
Baguio City, Philippines – In 2008, the Clean Air Act of Baguio City was accepted and put into motion. However, the process was long, tiring, and without opposed beliefs. At first glance, this should be the perfect project for the city since the place prides itself as one of the most famous tourist's spots in the country due to the grandeur of its surroundings and the cleanliness of the environment. However, due to the local legislature's inability to convey the benefits and the step-by-step goals of the bill, coupled with their failure to persuade the city council, the proposal was first rejected.
Problems in the art of persuasion
By the first proposal of the bill, it was delivered to the City Council, who are composed of individuals with quasi-judicial powers regarding the city's legislative and administrative processes. This consist of lawyers and elected officials who are known for making decisions, not based on their emotional stance on a subject, but a combination of reason, character, context, and emotion - in other words, rationality. The reason for rejection of the bill's original proposition was its lack of an evidentiary claim that the city's 'air' was deteriorating. Fortunately, the bill was passed when scientific evidence backed up the claim.
