A. Hook: Engineering and computer science are very popular today among students when deciding their majors. According to the NCES (2016), while there was a decrease of 36% on the number of degrees conferred in computer and information sciences between 2004 and 2009, there was an increase of 46% in that number between 2009 and 2014. As for the field of engineering and engineering technologies, the period between 2004 and 2009 saw an increase of 8% in degrees conferred. Between 2009 and 2014, the increase was 29% (NCES, 2016). Why is it there is such an increase in the majors related to engineering and computer science?
B. Background:
1 Nowadays, there are more, and more companies need more students who study for engineering and computer science. In fact, projections show engineering and computer jobs to be among the fastest growing in the future. According to Boston.com (2013), environmental engineering technicians, computer and system software engineers, environmental engineers, computer application software engineers, and biomedical engineers are among the fastest growing jobs by 2018.
2 In some states of America. The local government encourages their students to study engineering and computer science. States like Florida and California have invested in STEM (Science, technology, engineering and mathematics) programs to encourage students to pursue related courses.

C. Thesis statement: There has been an increase in students pursuing majors in engineering and computer science. The demand in the job market and the encouragement of governments seem to be contributing to this. While students can follow the encouragement and the demand in the job market, they may as well decide to follow their interests and passion.
II. Supporting Point 1: Engineering and computer science jobs offer very high salary.
* Supporting Detail 1: Computer science and electrical engineering are ranked first and second respectively in the list of majors with highest starting salaries by Forbes (Kauflin, 2016).
