Introduction
Global citizenship, as defined by Rysen and Katzarska-Miller, is “caring, awareness, and embracing cultural diversity while promoting sustainability and social justice” (Rysen & Katzarska-Miller, 2013, p. 858). By studying and understanding the significance of global citizenship, contemporary society can start functioning as a unit and establish a mutual revere for cultural differences. Achieving this can be highly beneficial in individuals’ daily lives. The theory of global citizenship is beneficial in helping us become better individuals.
Distinguishing between “Globalism” and “Globalization”
After reading the assigned article and viewing the assigned video, I made a distinction between “globalization” and “globalism.” “Globalization” is a process of interaction and integration among companies, governments, and individuals of different nations and is aided by technology. Contrarily, “Globalism” is characterized by networks of connections that span multi-continental distances.
A Global Citizen in a Technologically Advanced World
Technological advancements can be advantageous to an individual’s success in meeting academic, professional, and personal goals simply because most of our activities are digitalized on smartphones, tablets, and computers. As stated in the assigned video, “Individuals stream between continents and everyone is visible on computer screens worldwide” (Jakobs & Monfils, 2010). This is very accurate because a significant fraction of individuals either owns a Smartphone or computer. In varied ways, technological advancements are strengthening how individuals communicate between continents (Berson, 2003). Technological advancements and the methods through which we interact are made daily. Technology is literally at our fingertips and our grasp all day. How we utilize technology determines our character as global citizens.
Discrepancies between Theorists
Global citizenship has various varying definitions, yet, they all appear to be using identical verbiage. As explained by Katzarska-Miller and Rysen, “The confusion about global citizenship is exasperated as theorists derive from various perspectives and disciplines (e.g., theological, political, educational, developmental) to define the construct (Rysen and Katzarska-Miller, 2013, p. 859). Some theorists may hold beliefs that certain characteristics emphasize citizenship, whereas other theorists may feel that there are no specific characteristics related to this notion.
