If they do not easily think of an image, suggest that they think of this as a snapshot or a short video, for example, and give them time to think. What is the Image you have of a Child Acquiring His/her First Language?
For this assignment, I selected two participants to answer the qualitative question. The first participant was Rose, a 23-year-old female, and the type of interaction she had with a child was as a parent. The second participant was Cody, a 21-year-old male, and the type of interaction he had with had as a child was as a sibling.
When asked to describe their prototypical image of a child learning his/her first language, Rose stated that when his son was born, he made reflexive crying sounds for the first two months. At around eight months, her son began to babble, that is, producing repetitive syllables like ma-ma-ma. Rose added that at twelve months, her son spoke his first words, and at twenty-four months, he began putting words together.
Cody stated that he remembers his sister laughing and vocally playing at around four months, and babbling and non-verbally bringing attention...
