The Iliad for OSU Citizens Literature Writing Assignment

Essay Instructions:

For this essay, pretend that you have been selected to be a student representative on a curriculum development committee at The Ohio State University. The committee’s task is to design a required reading curriculum to help educate OSU students as citizens. You have decided that Homer’s Iliad should be required as part of this curriculum, given the way we’ve read it in Classical Mythology.
All the committee members bring a written proposal about the curriculum; you too bring yours. In your proposal you discuss numerous provocations and inspirations that OSU citizen readers stand to gain from the Iliad. The committee is generally compelled by your argument and evidence, but they think your argument will have more force if you narrow it down to a few good provocations and inspirations.
