A Definition of Democracy
Governing the people has been one of the major debates in history, with different republics seeking to adopt what they believe is the best governance method. As a result, governing styles, such as socialism, democracy, collectivism, fascism, and monarchism, are some approaches countries adopt to govern the public. Concerning this, North America is notable for adopting a democratic style. Adopting a democratic governance style is because it fosters freedom and equality, which qualifies it as the most acceptable form of administration. In understanding the idea further, Reich (2016) defines democracy as a governance style granting people the right to exercise power and civic obligations.
Based on its definition, scholars agree that democratic government is widely accepted since it fosters individual liberty and human dignity for all. In relation to this, the principal feature of democracy is that it grants people the power, voice, and say in how government is run. By giving everybody the power and voice, democracy allows tolerating opposing viewpoints and criticism. As a result, democracy may be typified by giving people the freedom of expression and opinions without fear. The bigger picture about democracy is that it is based on the freedom of thought and association. Based on this approach, democracies are laudable for protecting the people’s fundamental rights, such as freedom of expression and religion, the ability to engage, discuss, and participate in politics, economics, and social history, as well as the right to legal protection. On the same note, democracy ensures every citizen of voting age can exercise their voting rights in elections. Although democracy is much about protecting the people, they also have a role to play: being morally and legally obligated to participate in activities that contribute to enhanced liberties.

In that context, citizens are treasured individuals since they make up a democratic nation.
