Solar energy is a key component when it comes to the generation of renewable energy. The technologies that come along with the fourth industrial revolution (Industry 4.0) has the potential to take solar energy a notch higher in terms of efficiency, cost-effectiveness, and reliability. Artificial Intelligence (AI), the Internet of Things (IoT), and Robotics are the most influential technologies in revolutionizing the production of renewable energy (Choudhury, 2020), which presents several advantages over the conventional sources of energy. Furthermore, renewable energy sources have a common problem of variability and thus disruptive technologies can bridge this gap.
The integration of IoT solutions in renewable energy sources particularly solar energy has some benefits and can be implemented in various ways. IoT heavily relies on sensor technology and these sensors can be attached to solar energy systems at the point where solar energy is generated and also transmission lines (Joshi, 2019). This will facilitate remote monitoring of the solar systems, enabling problem identification and troubleshooting in real-time, hence lowering the operational costs while increasing reliability. A more advanced approach of IoT integration in solar systems is whereby sensors are used to detect the positions and angles in which maximum solar energy can be absorbed and adjust the solar panels accordingly automatically with the help of IoT devices. Solar energy is adversely affected by weather conditions and this is where IoT solutions with weather forecasting capabilities chip in to mitigate the uncertainty or variability of solar energy.
