The Old Man and the Sea
Language is an important element that should not be underestimated when narrating real life events. Writers use memoirs to narrate different life experiences by narrowing the lens, focusing on specific events. The old man and the sea is a narrative by Ernest Hemingway, telling a story of Santiago a Cuban fisherman who struggled to make ends meet. The story uses figurative language to help the readers visualize the event through creative writing. The memoir is a unique wiring style than connecting the reader with the past to convey an intimate story that unites the reader to history.
Summary
The old man and the sea is a narrative about an old fisherman battle with a large Marlin. The story began with disappointment when Santiago had gone fishing for 84 days without catching any fish. The parent of a young boy he was mentoring forbids the boy from sailing with Santiago calling him unlucky. One-day Santiago venture further into the sea, catching a huge fish. Santiago fights the big fish trying to kill it but the sharks surrounds the fish and eats it.
The fish was two feet long but was eaten by a group of sharks. Santiago tries to chase them away using his oar and tiller, Santiago reaches the shore exhausted with a scratched hand. Other fishermen measure the skeleton of the fish and were amazed by the catch. Even though Santiago had succeeded in catching the biggest fish after long endurance, he could only prove it by the skeleton, he got nothing for it.
Opinion Paragraph
In the story, the author created a hero who personifies honor, courage, endurance and had faith. Hemingway presents the story using third person narrative, he even reports the old man’s’ thoughts. Even though the narrator presents an objective account of the story in most cases, he exhibits sympathy and struggles of life, presenting a gloomy picture of life throughout the story. Santiago is an ideal character that gives the reader hope. One of his notable attributes is his voracious spirit, no matter how hard the situation is his spirit remains undefeated throughout the story.
