Graduate Research versus Undergraduate Research
My graduate research differs in many ways from the one I did in my undergraduate level. Firstly, I did my undergraduate projects in groups where I had to contribute some parts. In contrast, the graduate research focuses on individual abilities where I have to create a project solely. Secondly, unlike graduate research, there was not much emphasis on having proper in-text citations of information obtained from other sources in undergraduate research. There was only a necessity to have a citation page at the end of the paper. Thirdly, the graduate research is more comprehensive as compared to undergraduate research; most of the ones I did in undergraduate did not require in-depth knowledge of the field. Everything in the graduate project has to be supported by scholarly work that has been done in the subject area. The similarity is that both requires hard work and focus on realizing the goals. However, my experience is also distinct from those presented in John’s and Hanna’s post. John’s difference revolves around the lack of his professional and personal touch to the undergraduate project. Hanna’s case the undergraduate research was well-structured to create a basis for the graduate level.
Graduate research has some distinct characteristics from undergraduate research in that the former is more involving and is meant to show expertise in a particular area. In comparison, undergraduate research is done to fulfil some course requirement. The depth and the breadth of research increases in graduate studies (Dooley, Mahon & Oshiro, 2004).
