Character Analysis
When comparing Amanda to Violet, there are some differences and subtle similarities that come up. Despite the fact that they are characters from two different pieces, they show some element of similarities, among them, the fact that they use distractions to manage their lives pressure, they consider themselves as having failed and slipped through life without having made the right choices. In the case of Violet, she uses prescription medication to get by. It is a habit that has developed into an addiction and one that she uses to bring down all the bitterness that she has in her life. Her marriage is broken and her family is not exactly supportive. The addiction helps her to manage the pain that she harbors inside. This is a very interesting element given that, in the case of Amanda, she is also trying to escape the world that she lives in (Puchko, 2018). She is similar to Violet in that, she too is batting with bitterness that life has dealt; with her marriage having ended after her husband deserted her, she came crumbling. This brings in the element of coincidence where the two characters are struggling with the remnants of a failed marriage. They both feel the pain of losing the support of their spouse and as such use escape mechanisms to try and establish some level of control over their lives (Letts, 2018). They also have families that they take care of and this makes their life even harder. They have to make sure that they stay ahead even when they are feeling as if they are falling behind in every area of their lives.
