Geraldine B. Roman is the first transgender in the Philippines and this is a big step for them because they are currently trying to fight for LGBT rights. When I first heard the news about her and what she is doing for their country, I immediately researched about her. The way she carries herself and her sophistication, but still being one with the people is what got my attention.
She recently did a speech about her childhood and what people would tell her. It is not a surprise that people questioned her gender, when she decided to become a woman, and her relationship with God. The questions were handled with such grace and she politely told them that she did not just decide to become woman, she already knew since she was 6 years old. This is something that the majority of the LGBT community felt while growing up. It is not a matter of choosing to be a lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender because it is what a person really is.
I respect my friends and family who are part of the LGBT community because they have seen and felt pain, which is why they are the most compassionate people I know. This is how Geraldine B. Roman is because she was also discriminated against, but she keeps on fighting. Sometimes, the ones who are considered non-conformists fight the greatest struggles and when you listen to more of her speeches, you will know more about her.
Those who believe in her as a leader do not try to steal her role despite the news about her. They see through her because of her desire to enabling others to act against LGBT discrimination.
The Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity or Expression (SOGIE) equality bill has been changed to Anti-Discrimination Bill (ADB) and Geraldine B. Roman made an emotional speech about it (Bueno, 2016). It is because the bill was getting a lot of scrutiny from lawmakers and religious groups. The bill is considered to be a violation of their religious freedom, but that is not true. The bill is not for legalizing same-sex marriage or unions because it is only stop discriminatory practices against the LGBT community, especially in schools and the workplace. Geraldine B. Roman was one of the representatives who reiterated this.
