Module 2 - Case The Academic Essay Case Assignment In a well-organized and well-supported essay, identify three to five reasons explaining what you believe has made today's Gen Y, "the Millenials," the way that they are. What are the causes? Who, or what, is responsible? A well-organized essay has a beginning, middle, and an end. The beginning, or introduction, should include an opening sentence to grab your reader’s attention. Follow the opening sentence with a brief background on the topic or situation. In this case, it would be a definition and characteristics of Gen Y. The last sentence of the introduction is the thesis statement. The thesis states the main point of the essay, which in this case, would be a statement affirming what had made Gen Y who they are today. A well-supported essay includes supporting points, details, and examples. For this essay, you must decide the best way to organize the body of the paper. Will you have a paragraph for each reason or cause? Will you divide the body of your paper into three paragraphs, one for each cause? In any case, each body paragraph must support (explain) your reasoning (rationale) using specific details. Each body paragraph must have a topic sentence that states the main point of the paragraph. The conclusion typically summarizes the main points of the essay and/or closes with a lasting impression that connects the reader to their world. Be sure to proofread your essay and edit for proper grammar, punctuation, diction (word choice), and spelling, as errors in sentence skills will lower a final grade. A grade will be determined based on the Module 2 Case expectations and the Trident University General Education rubric for English. Papers must be double-spaced in Times or Times New Roman font (12 cpi) with standard one-inch margins. The first person "I" is not used in a formal essay, nor is the passive "you." In place of "you," "one" may be used. No secondary sources are to be used in the process of writing this first paper; it is to be entirely written based on one's point of view and supported with body points and details. Case Expectations •Write an essay (no less than three pages in length) that states an original thesis statement on Gen Y. •Include an introductory paragraph with thesis statement. •Include body paragraphs (each with a topic sentence that states the point of the paragraph) that support the thesis through examples and details. •Include a conclusion that summarizes the main points of the essay and/or leaves the reader with a lasting impression on the issue. Academic writing reveals what the writer believes and is supported by the evidence that has contributed to that thinking. It is not a story, description, or summary.

Most university writing assignments involve taking a stand on an issue.  The purpose would be to not only inform and explain, but to persuade the reader to respect your position.

The tone used in Academic Writing may be different than your earlier experiences with writing.  Academic Writing is never written in the first person unless specified.  Unless we are responding to our summer vacation, we do not use the first person, "I.”

We also do not use the second person, approaching the reader as if we are writing a letter or having a conversation.  That means do not use the following words: you, your, yourself, yourselves, and don’t


Remember that writing is more formal than conversation: avoid slang, jargon, and conventional terms. (Basically, things, etc.)

Generation Y has been branded as the generation that is self centered and one that seeks to accumulate all the material things, which they could possibly want for the sheer aspect of getting to attract all the attention. This is a generation of persons that were born in the 80s to the 90s and thus most of them are in their 20s, within the education system while the others are new in the job market and some are jobless. This generation is quite different from the generation X which came before it and is essentially the parents to the generation Y. The generation Y is one of the fastest growing generations of all times in the work place in all most walks of life. Most of the debates that have been around for quite some time, relate to the fact that the generation Y is lazy and do not want to work for their dues. At the same time, they are seen to want too much free time with reference to the time that they wish for to spend at work. At the end of the day, they are said to be looking forward to a huge pay.
Thesis statement: The Y generation has developed over the last three decades due to the media, parenting and the technological advancement of their time.
With the Y generation, the level of connection with the people around them is quite high and so is the need for feedback on the various aspects of their lives. This means that, they are constantly seeking to communicate with the management at work and seniors at home. As such, it is common to find that the people from this generation seek recognition for their efforts regardless of how minimal they are. It is also common to find that they look for guidance on the various aspects surrounding them for the reassurance that they are on the right track. This aspect is one of the reasons that this generation has been criticized as being overly seeking attention.
Y generation is also achievement oriented, meaning that most of their pride is in knowing that they have attained their goals. This idea of having goals and pushing to achieve them is derived from the fact that, they are confident about their abilities which make them very ambitious. It is common to find that, the Y generation is very comfortable around technological developments. Due to the fact that they have grown up during the time that technology was taking shape up to the advances that are there today. Most of them apply technology in almost all areas of their lives. It is also common to find that this generation prefers emails and text messages, rather than meeting face to face with other people. The idea of work being central to any one's life is not applicable to the Y generation. This is due to the fact that most of the people in the generation would trade in more hours to be with their families rather than be at the office.
