Hamburgers are America’s favorite food. Consumers spend more than $100 billion on the beef sandwiches every year. But despite America’s infatuation with burgers, there is considerable dissatisfaction among consumers based on hamburger quality and value. Many customers just aren’t happy with what is served up at market-leading fast-food outlets. They want a better burger, and they won’t hesitate to pay a higher price to get one. Enter Smashburger. Started just a few years ago in Denver, Colorado, Smashburger is now a rapidly expanding chain of more than 100 stores in 17 states. And all this growth happened during a severe economic downturn despite Smashburger’s average lunch check of $8. Many customers pay as much as $10 or $12 for a burger, fries, and shake. The Smashburger video shows how this small startup has pulled off a seemingly impossible challenge.

Based on the 2014 results of Consumer Reports fast-food survey, done by ConsumerReports.org, what came out clearly from the responses of 32,405 subscribers and survey of 96, 208 meals at 65 chains was that quality of the food is an important in the dining decisions of Americans today (ConsumerReports.org, 2014). Price and convenience of location are less significant predictors in comparison to quality in determining the dining decisions of the consumers (Cheng, 2015). Many respondents described their dissatisfaction with fast-food hamburger options on the basis of low value of the foods in the fast foods. This helps in explaining why the traditional fast-food chains are losing their edge to fast casual chains offering higher-end fare with quick-service convenience. The reason people continue to consume burgers yet they are not satisfied demonstrates the high demand of the product that Smashburger has capitalized on by adopting the value-added pricing strategy (ConsumerReports.org, 2014).
Smashburger being a fast casual restaurant is pursuing a value-added pricing strategy that focuses on how to compete on the highly competitive restaurant business (Eileen, 2013). Smashburger applies this strategy by marketing its high quality food products in the readily available market niche for a slightly higher price.
The company has been seeking new ways to offer better services and maximize on its profits. Smashburger strategy is to think and act local where products are customized based on the customer’s wants and needs. Each market has specialized burgers customized and sold only in that market for different prices. This is strategy is referred to as Differentiated Pricing. For example the D.C. market, you will find the Capital Burger, made by baby arugula rather lettuce. The Capital Burger also includes a grilled onion, applewood smoked bacon, aged Swiss cheese, mayo and tomatoes served on a brioche bun.
