Appropriate measures need to be taken to reduce these risks, including encouraging heavy smokers to reduce their average smoking and even quitting. Therefore, increasing the price of cigarettes is the right step to helping smokers to quit for their own good.
The use of ‘sin’ taxes is an appropriate strategy that helps smokers quit, thus minimizing the looming health risks. According to Bakalar (2017), an increase in the prices of a single pack of cigarettes by $1 increases the rates of quitting smoking by 20%.
