Expectations and Stereotypes
Expectation act as a guide in my service delivery. My agency has many expectations concerning my internship, for example, I am expected to handle the clients professionally and follow the policies of the agency as well as being able to apply my classroom knowledge in a practical aspect. I use my emerging strength-based practice by continuing to monitor my client’s situation; I make them feel appreciated which boosts their confidence.
My job demands inclusive analysis of the client’s situation. I have to scrutinize the client’s problem from both views: the client’s view and the social worker’s view. This builds the understanding of the problem and enhances problem solving skills such as breaking down the problem, understanding the context of the problem, searching for available solutions and guiding the student to make the right choice.
Emerging trends are based on the fact of professional handling of clients in terms of the language used, the diction and the treatment in terms of the student character. I provide a warm atmosphere for my students without being tensed and I must speak with a soft diction.
Through identification of weekly themes, I am expected to document how and when the learning goals have been achieved. This makes me research more about various topics or problems presented by the student, thereby widening my knowledge and building on my research skills. Besides the identification of critical areas for improvement, my supervisor outlines my personal strengths and provides guidance for my professional development.
Evaluations should be a continuous process. My supervisors are expected to identify my key areas for improvement and communicated them to me. I recognize the stereotypes I have within myself about the Asian population and I bring them to the attention of my supervisor as she can handle the reality of the complete group.
Communication: Building Bridges, Not Walls
Communication involves verbal and non-verbal cues. Efficient communication involves integrating both to convey my desired information. Major communication skills include maintenance of eye contact with my student and appropriate tonal variation. Different tones might transmit different messages. The student should be decisive when expressing the situation to me as the social work intern.
