“Many of these new fairy-tale texts transform the material by questioning or subverting the themes of the source stories, critiquing or updating, or even parodying them. They do not simply retell the story, but change the story in fundamental ways so that the types, motifs, and tropes of the source stories are used for a new purpose.” (Frus 7). How far do you agree? Discuss with detailed reference to ONE or MORE retold tales.
For your first essay, you'll be writing an exemplification essay to support or to challenge this statement that new versions of well-known tales are not just retelling the stories with a modern gloss but changing them to serve a new purpose. This kind of paper uses examples to convey the thesis or central idea.
Your thesis or central idea should engage with regard to the opening statement and should introduce the example(s) you are going to use. What does the statement mean? What purpose did fairytales have? Has the purpose changed? Has the message changed? What's a parody, and is there something in the nature of parody that supports or undermines Frus' statement? Are you going to agree, disagree, or partially agree with the writer?
Brainstorm about fairy tales, transformation, subversion, parody, etc. I.e. jot down a random list of ideas/examples as they occur to you. Then consider your list – what do these comments/things have in common? How would you explain your choices to an audience? Can you group any of your ideas together? If you can, each group of ideas will make a coherent paragraph and the element that binds them together should be your topic sentence.
