Dexotoc is seeking to sign a contract with Zambia to supply baby formula and also other related dairy-related products. The baby formula is given to breastfeeding mothers who are facing challenges in producing enough milk for their child. It stimulates and supplements breast milk. However, Dexotoc’s chief nutritionist has completed a recent study on the quality of water in the rural areas in Zambia, and it has been established that water in most of the regions is contaminated, and mixing it with Dexotoc will lead to most of the babies getting sick. Regarding this, Dexotoc’s commitment and belief are to act responsibly and ethically, as it is good for the business as well. They also consider their first responsibility as being the ones who use their products. With the knowledge of the imminent health risk to babies, if Dexotoc is used in rural areas with contaminated water, Dexotoc Inc. should consider morality as guided by Kantia and avoid entering into the contract with Zambia.
Kantian ethics is also guided by the Kant’s end principle. The formula of end states that one should behave in such a way that they always treat others with humanity, whether in their own person or in the person of any other individual, not both as a means and an end. According to Kant, this implies that moral obligation should be considered a rational necessity, which which one willfully considers being morally right (Teubner, 2019). It also implies that individuals should not be considered as a means to an end, and even when it happens, they should be treated as an end in themselves. Basically, Kant’s argument is that acting morally should be done willfully, and that individuals should be treated with reason.
The Kantian principle is an example of a duty-based or deontological principle since it is concerned with what an individual does, and not the outcomes of their actions. The principle encourages people to do the right thing because it is the right thing to do, and avoid doing wrong things because they are wrong to do (Ward, 2019).
