1 Describe some of the unorthodox strategies covered by Terris during this era that made Lockheed become "…a byword for the shady practices of American multi-national corporations, and a major impetus for new legislation...”
These unorthodox strategies involved connections to overpower decisions that may be secondary to the quality of the fighter jets that are on bidding to be used for the defensive security of the country where the proposal is being made (Terris, 2005).
Lockheed searched for partners and middlemen around the world who have connections in the highest position in the government of each specific country. These men can influence these politicians to choose a product without endangering becoming tracked by the good and just men within the government (Terris, 2005).
Here are some of the alliances that Lockheed has made to maintain his legacy: 1) He formed an alliance and the services of Prince Bernhardt of the Netherlands who is espoused with the Dutch royal family. Prince Bernhardt receives payment from various middlemen, legally or illegally.; 2) Yoshio Kadama, a secret agent in Japan, cooperated with Lockheed. Kadama is an intransigent nationalist but at the same time, he is an underworld personality. Lockheed chose him since he had been a close comrade of one of the prime ministers in Japan from 1950-1960.; 3) The Widows and Orphans Fund opened a path for communication for Lockheed toward the high-end personalities in AURI Indonesian Airforce after making generous donations to the said fund.; 4) Lockheed assisted many political parties in Italy and made these groups his charity beneficiaries.; and 5) Adnan Khashoggi, one of the greatest enthusiasts and subordinate of President Nixon, became an ally of Lockheed (Terris, 2005).
Due to these many unorthodox connections, Lockheed was able to procure and trade over 2, 000 Starfighters abroad and around less than 300 Starfighter to the United States Air Force. Lockheed’s unethical strategies prevented the company to suffer from a financial crisis. Also, his methods are not entirely unorthodox for bribery, and secrecy is customary in this business world to expand the company’s connections (Terris, 2005).
2 A. On the issue of overseas bribes, Terris asks the questions, "Who was hurt by the [overseas bribes to secure sales of aircraft]? The competitors, of course, but what was unethical about beating out the competition that was playing by the same rules?” (p.59). What do you think about a situation where underhanded and back door deals are the way the game is played if everybody is on the same playing field? That is to say, if everybody is playing by the same shady rules, is it unethical to compete?
Lockheed did not practice the internal ethics program from the 1960s to the 1970s. However, not having this paved a way for transactions in the business world. If Lockheed considered to formulate an internal ethics program, his business will not be even brought up for discussion (Terris, 2005).
