SUMMARY
The article by Mendes & Goren (2020) discusses how COVID -19 has indicated the importance of essential and frontline employees in the well-being and functioning of society. The authors also state that healthcare professionals are working day and night to ensure people are safe. The authors have highlighted some of the employees who have been in the frontline in fighting COVID-19. These employees include food service employees, emergency personnel, and child care providers among others. In the article, the authors have elaborated on the meaning of essential employees. According to Mendes & Goren (2020) women are the essential employees in the economy. For example in the state of Virginia, 68% of the essential employees are women. Women are mostly employed in child and healthcare industries. The authors also state that racism in areas like housing, education, employment has made black employees be overrepresented in the frontline industries yet they are paid low wages. These employees have to put their lives at risk during this pandemic.
