Society has its set rules that act as the norm which is also a culture that is expected to govern the people their behavior and appearance. The set rules also dictate the rewards and punishments in the social setting and will regulate the social consequences and normal management of the people. However, people will always tend to deviate from the norm; this means the will violate the normal rules, expectations or understanding set by the society; this is referred to as deviance. Deviance may include; drug abuse, pollution, lateness, theft, illness and gender imbalance.
In the functionalist theory, scholars claim that deviance is inevitable even in a perfect society. In essence, deviance is functional and there must be small social changes in the society that are healthy. In addition, deviance is a form of reinforcing the social norm and values.
