Understanding of Language
English 1C course has changed my comprehension of language in many ways. I have understood that Language changes and adapts to the requirements of the users. This is a good thing as if it had not altered since the 1950s for instance, we could not have had the words to reference the cable TV, fax machine and modem. With changing needs of the utilizers, language will go on changing. But, the change is very slow that from time to time we rarely see it.
From my understanding language changes because of different reasons. Firstly, it alters with regards to the needs if the utilizers. New experiences, products and technologies for instance need other words to reference them efficiently and clearly. For instance, texting initially was known as text messaging since it enabled an individual to send a text instead of voice message using phones. As it became common, I am now utilizing the short form text to refer to the process and the message, as in I will text John now or I just received a text.
Also, in a fundamental way no two people can have a similar language experience. The set of words as well as constructions that I know are different from those other people know relying on area of the country, education level, job and age among other factors. I select new phrases and words from the diverse people I converse with and they unify to make something different from other people’s specific way of speaking. Similarly, different groups in the community utilize language as a path to identify their group’s identity to who is and is not a participant.
The English 1C class has greatly improved my writing skills. From the knowledge gathered in class, I have adopted different writing styles to incorporate into my daily life with regards to the circumstance and need to write. The way I would write a class assignment is different to how I would do in a job application, a text message or just a reminder note. The class has helped me improve my diversity in writing skills and through practice I have been able to learn of different styles.
My textual interpretation has changed as text speak undermines the English language. Abbreviations have existed for a long time; whereas some are new, others like the utilization of ‘u’ for ‘you’ and ‘8’ for ‘later’ have existed for many years. But the use of these abbreviations requires the ability to utilize them as well as spell them. Therefore, to abbreviate I must know the letters to abbreviate.
Sentence structure is another consideration. About 10 years ago, it was common to ask, ‘have you a moment?’ currently, I may say ‘D’you have a sec?” sentences have developed new abbreviations and emerging words have been integrated to daily questions.
Additionally, word order has also changed gradually where initially, the order of words was free than in the current English. Further, the sounds of language have changed since about 5 centuries ago ...
