About some economics. There are five topics, I picked (Is economic development at the cost of pollution and environment a good idea for any country in the short run?). Total is 8 pages need to write, but it is not final draft, so only five pages need to write. I attached details and requirements.

Each of the questions below involve trade-offs. I am mentioning the basic trade-off for each of the following questions. You have to argue for a position you believe on any one of the questions.

  1. 1.     Are tax cuts effective?

Depending on whether it is an income or corporate tax cut, tax cuts leads to increased consumption (through increased disposable income) and higher investment by firms. However, government revenue (of which tax revenue is a big part) reduces. This is a trade-off.

 

  1. 2.     Is free trade harmful to domestic economy?

Free trade results in gains from trade. The gains from trade theory tells us that some people benefit, some will be worse off, but the economy as a whole is better off. Trade leads to lower prices as the domestic country imports goods and services at a cheaper price from abroad. But some people in the domestic country, end up losing their jobs, that are outsourced to foreign nations. This is a trade-off.

 

  1. 3.     Does School Finance Reform Affect Adolescence (Teenager) Risky Behaviors?

This question is related to the first paper. Risky behaviors are smoking, drug usage, alcohol consumption, delinquency, and teenage fertility, etc. As we all know, school finance reform improved the quality of education; notably, it added to more activities on the curriculum. Therefore, students might not have time to involve risky behaviors because they had to participate in school activities. However, you may think that increasing school finances means that decreasing other public expenses, for example, security expenses. If states cut the budget of the police department, this leads to fewer police officers and more crimes. This is a trade-off. (This may not be realistic, but you are free to come up with different mechanisms.)

 

 

 

 

  1. 4.     Does universal health care make everyone’s life better?

Universal health care means that the government offers quality medical services to everyone, irrespective of their ability to pay. However, the cost of such a system is pretty high, and usually involves imposition of high taxes . This is a trade-off.

 

  1. 5.     Is economic development at the cost of pollution and environment a good idea for any country in the short run?

Many countries are actively pursuing policies that accelerates growth in the economy in the short run. But there are costs involved that harm the health of its citizens and the environment in the long run. This is a trade-off.

Climate change has led to numerous debates over the direction the world ought to take. There are those who believe that the world should do away with fossil fuels entirely while others believe such a move would be irrational. The latter group appears to be in support of the use of renewable energy sources which the former group says are not adequate to be a permanent substitute to fossil fuels. Regardless of the side one takes, the truth is that economic growth and development has been at the center of the deteriorating condition of the planet for the developed nations. To the developed nations, economic growth means increased income, heightened standards of living, enhanced healthcare, etc. However, all the above come at a grave cost to the environment. But, on the other hand, one can also not be faulted to say that developed nations are better equipped to deal with pollution than developing countries. For developing nations, economic growth takes precedence as they seek to increase income, improve healthcare facilities, and reduce poverty. The above thus makes one wonder whether developing nations should focus on economic growth like the developed nations to help enhance their status to levels where they can as well be better equipped to handle climate change. The above thus leads to the question that forms the gist of the paper: is the idea of enhanced economic development at the cost of pollution and the environment a good idea for countries in the short-run?
First of all, the issue of climate change is real. One major effect of climate change has been an increase in the global average temperature which is reported to have been gradually increasing (Ritchie and Roser, 2017). The researchers report that the change has been more than a degree Celsius and it dates back to the pre-industrial times. As seen in the image shown below (Fig 1), change in temperature has been happening for a long time now, and the change became intense as the world continued to grow economically. Concentrations of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere have also been high and increasing with each passing year as the world continues to grow economically. The image shown from World Bank (Fig 2) shows that carbon dioxide emissions have been increasing with each passing year. From the image, between 2011 and 2014, carbon dioxide emissions appear to remain steady. However, as reported by Levin and Lebling (2019), carbon dioxide emissions jumped to an all-time high in 2019, and this can be attributed to an increase in the use of natural gas as well as oil. So, climate change is indeed a major issue in the world today, and it is crucial for the world to holistically develop measures to counter its effects.
