Drum Major Instinct Speech
The Drum Major Instinct is one of the finest sermons delivered by Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. at Ebenezer Baptist Church in 1968 two months before he was assassinated. It was during this sermon that King acknowledged that there are individuals who desire to be first and being recognized. This desire was referred by King as “drum major instinct.” King suggested a different kind of ambition which may be obtained through a life of service. Dr. King emphasized greatness to show the importance of service to mankind, and that one only needed love and grace to become great.
By explaining that not every person can be famous and that every individual may be great since greatness is evaluated by service. King aimed at emphasizing all individuals may not famous at the same time. If this happened, then people would be chasing for a different thing since famous would be normal. Additionally, King wanted to emphasize the need for providing service to humankind, the benefits of serving the interests of other people. Besides, King also aimed at showing that becoming great was easy since it is determined by one’s love for others.
By the greatness of service, Dr. King wanted people to understand that each individual may achieve greatness since each person has somethings which, when offered, may promote the well-being of other people. Additionally, greatness is available to everyone who is...
