Digital Divide
The number of Latino adults who browse the internet has been on the increase at a faster rate in comparison to whites. This has reduced the gap in internet usage between whites and Latinos from 16% in 2009 to 5% by 2015 (Brown et al. 2016). The number of Hispanics who live in the US has been on the increase, and they also comprise the nation’s youngest population since over half of them are under 18 years of age (Brown et al. 2016). The increasing population is due to more Hispanic immigrating to the US. Even though there has been a rise in internet use among Hispanics, the rate has stagnated among whites and blacks. The increase in internet use is also attributed to more people who have a tablet or smartphone that they use to browse the internet. Over 80% of Latinos browse the internet via their smartphones (Brown et al. 2016). The likelihood that an individual will browse the internet via the smartphone increases with a higher family income and more education. Smartphones have meant that more people have become smartphone-dependent since it is cheaper and convenient to browse the internet via their mobile devices.
