I recently attended a performance of Hamlet at Trout theatre within Belmont University. The University hosts one of the oldest theatres with a proscenium stage comprising of approximately 300 seats. The floor is raked for all seats to have a good view of the stage. I arrived in time to find ushers showing people where to sit. I received a pamphlet with instructions as I entered the theater. Like many students in the room, I was existed to watch a live performance for the first time.
The performance began promptly at 10.00a.m. and concluded around 12.30pm. There was a one ten minute break after Act one of the play. The break came at a convenient time because I had the chance to visit the restroom and buy some snacks before the play could resume. After the intermission ended, everyone was requested to turn their mobile device off and be seated quietly as we waited for Act two.
Like the most acting versions of Shakespeare tragedies, the play followed Quarto Two versions; a play that could be acted within two hours (Brockett et al, 2016). The stage was designed in a way to represent the real environment in line with the director concept of the castle of Elsinore. Some soft musical instruments could be heard from a distance that enhanced the mood of the characters which kept on changing from one scene to the other (Brockett et al, 2016).
