3. Journal # 6 For each day that you volunteer, create a new journal entry in which the first line is the day, date, and time period that you worked that day. When I had the opportunity to meet the hiring officer at my facility, it turned out to be an informative and enlightening experience. While speaking to the officer, it clearly emerged that many prospective employees often fall short of the interviewer’s expectations, and this most often makes it difficult for the interview to identify the best workers. In order to clearly understand the experience of the hiring officer, I asked a few questions that sought to shed more light on the matter. First, I asked about what interviewers look for in suitable candidates so as to better understand what is expected. The officer cited preparedness and confidence as being core factors they look for in interviewees. Secondly, I asked about the interview process and its structure. Unlike many employers, this facility only had a two-step interview first to qualify candidates on proficiency and then on personality to ensure they are a good fit. The third question focused on the influence of one’s educational background on getting hired, more specifically whether one’s alma mater can influence the hiring process. The officer admitted that such considerations are hardly taken into account, seeing as candidates have to demonstrate proficiency. Fourth, I asked about some of the instances in which the officer had been most disappointed in the interviewees. The officer cited one case where a candidate came to the interview drunk, ill-prepared, and possibly from a long night out. Finally, upon asking about the best experiences, the officer cited having interviewed a candidate that had prepared a PowerPoint slide to demonstrate why they were a good fit for the facility.
