Sherlock Holmes is a single minded character who has the power of detecting, observing and thinks logically in all his duties. He is a workaholic who concentrates in his work to avoid the habit of drug use to for stimulation. In Arthur Conan Doyle, "The Adventure of Charles Augustus Milverton," Holmes is hired by Lady Eva Blackwell to retrieve all the love letters that Charles Augustus Milverton uses to blackmail her at the eve of her wedding to a super-rich nobleman. Holmes knows Milverton well as a bad person who is a professional blackmailer and scum on earth. However, he is unable to access all the information especially the blackmail letters in Milverton's house. Thus, he disguises as a plumber and fakes love to Milverton's house maid to have access to the apartment. Based on his line of duty as a detective, Holmes is justified in becoming engaged to a maid that he does not intend to marry and burglarizing Milverton's house as well as not reporting to the police the name of Milverton's killer.
In support of the argument, the opponents of the idea suggest that Holmes' action is immoral. Yes, Holmes had other alternatives to access Milverton's delicate information especially the past love letters for blackmailing Lady Eva. However, it is noted that the initial attempt to forcefully have Milverton's notebook was futile. Instead, Milverton drew a revolver to prevent the attack besides he never walked with such delicate information on that day. Therefore, as a detective, Holmes had to use another mechanism to access Milverton's house, and that would be through faking a love affair with Milverton's maid as well as dressing as a plumber (Doyle, 1905). Besides, the short story revolves the main theme of blackmail hence as a way of fulfilling this event, Conan Doyle develops the unfolding events regarding the theme by making Holmes to fake love towards the maid to reveal the aspect of preventing a blackmail that is about to happen. Remember that Holmes knows Milverton's behavior of disappointing and blackmailing people and is in search of a way to nail him down.
