Motivation is what drives people to work in certain ways so that they can be able to achieve their goals and objectives in life. Motivation is just like a force that enables a person to be filled with enthusiasm and energy. Motivation pushes people to show high levels of commitment even though things might not be working well for them. It is very important for people to become motivated. Today, a lot of psychologists have studied the behavior of human beings and have validated their results in the form of motivation theories. Motivation theories give people a deep understanding of how human beings behave and what motivates them. Some of these theories include Path-Goal theory, Maslow's theory, and theory X and Theory Y.
1 Path-Goal Theory
Path-Goal theory is a motivation theory which is based on recognizing the style and behavior of a leader that fits workers and the work environment to attain certain goals. The goal of this theory is increasing the motivation of the employees and empowering them so that they can become productive (De, Peeters & Taris, 2014). This theory is based on the expectancy theory in which people behave in certain ways on the expectation that they will be emulated. Leaders select certain behaviors that are best suited to the needs of the employees and the working condition so that they can be able to guide workers through their path in the attainment of the goals.
2 Maslow’s Theory
According to Abraham Maslow, people are motivated when their needs are met. These needs begin from the lowest basic needs to the highest. These needs include psychological needs, safety needs, social needs, self-esteem, and self-actualization.
