The concept of Visuality
The term visuality refers to the ability of an individual’s mind to form mental pictures from what he or she perceives. The term builds a connection between what one sees in his or her right environment and the way the information is synthesized in their brains to impact on their general behaviors. There is a significant connection between what people see or how others view them and the kind of mental pictures they form CITATION Mir06 \l 1033 (Mirzoeff, 2006). However, it is critical to state that visuality is a diverse concept because it differs depending on the uniqueness of people. People form or perceive things differently even though they are looking at the same thing.
There is a significant relationship between the ways people see different things and how they experience the world. The brain takes the sight of things and how they appear in the world and changes them into pictures that are stored in the brain memory. For example, when I traveled to Timor Island during my holidays for a group tour, I took the family camera to take photographs of the place. However, when I was narrating the experiences I had in Timor Island, most of the mental pictures that I had from the place would form the basis of my explanation. I rarely refer to the photographs I took to explain how the island actually looks because the mental pictures are already stored in my mind.
There is a great power in vision because it is through sight that people understand aspects of their immediate environment. We clearly know several things through seeing how they look, move, react and even behave. Thus, vision is a critical tool through which people form opinions and attitudes towards race, sex and gender.
The visuality of people goes beyond just the taking of optical information and making it as our awareness; it is a concept that goes further and analyses the basis of the formation of reason from the visual information. This concept of visuality also goes further into the interpretation of what people see; it shows how the brain automatically fills the blanks that cannot be clearly interpreted. Scholars have argued that visions of people can be tricked to form a false perception of the real reality that exists CITATION Ste15 \l 1033 (Bordalo, Coffman, Gennaioli, & Shleifer, 2015). This misinterpretation streams from the ability of the brain to synthesis what one sees, to come up with diverse information. This difference in interpretation contributes significantly to the formation of bias thus leading to stereotypes.
