The computer world is under the competing dominance of two operating systems, namely; Microsoft's Windows and Apple's Mac OS. Through years of sheer hard work and amazing innovation, the two firms have managed to gain a global clientele of dedicated users who swear on the virtues of their preferred programs over the other.
A comparison of Microsoft and Apple yields interesting similarities that show both organizations have a lot in common. First, both companies developed their operating systems in the mid-1980s deriving their initial designs from the inspirational genius of their founders who set up their companies in the 1970s. Bill Gates led Microsoft in launching the first Windows operating system in 1985 while Steve Jobs led Apple into the first Mac OS launch in 1984. Both founders had a very specific market they were looking for and have maintained this focus with their subsequent products. (Walters, 2001, 184 – 200)
Second, both companies produce tailored versions of their operating systems for mini-computers and other devices, extending their technological experience beyond static personal computers. Apple produces a version of its Mac OS for the iPhone and iPad, enabling users to sync their devices and carry their material wherever they may go.
