Introduction
Dr. Susan Kun Leddy obtained her PhD from New York University College of Nursing in 1968. She was dedicated to assisting nurses advance the science of nursing through theory, teaching and research. Her achievement to further the science of Unitary Human Beings is well valued and is demonstrated by her Human Energy Model. Susan Leddy made an enduring contribution to nursing and also to the science of Unitary Human Beings (Leddy, 2004).
Florence Nightingale was born in Italy in 1820 to a wealthy family in Britain. She was brought up in the Anglican faith, and trusted that God called her to be a nurse. She officially announced her intention to become a nurse in 1844. She attended wounded soldiers during the Crimean war. After the war she established a nursing class at St. Thomas hospital in 1860 in London. Nightingale is credited for establishing the modern practice of nursing (Dossey, 2000).
Susan Leddys’ concepts of Human Energy addresses, human beings, the environment, health, and nursing. Theory of healthiness proposes that by channeling energy, human being gains power, which is the perceived ability to position energy towards the achievement of goals. The purpose of a nurse is to facilitate harmonious manifestation of both the nurse and client; this is accomplished through health pattern appraisal, subsequent energetic interventions and recognition (Leddy, 2004).
Likewise, in Florence Nightingale environmental theory incorporate the patients’ environment surrounding, in ones nursing care plan. The role of the nurse is to help the patient to recover and to alter the environment so as to gradually create an optimal condition for the patient body to heal by itself.
