Communication is a crucial element in all managerial functions. According to research that has already been conducted by various scholars indicates that communication styles of women differs significantly from those of men. The current society is filled with inequalities that partly lies in gender social relations and different gender identities. There are various explanations to this with different controversies as well. According to the existing literature, females are polite and tend to converse cooperatively while males tend to be competitive when they are conversing. These differences in communication styles among the different genders may lead to misunderstandings during conversations. However, due to factors like age, inadequate knowledge about effective communication styles, class and culture, miscommunication is also expected to occur same gender communications (Netshitangani, 2008). Therefore professionals need to be aware of gender differences during conversations to eliminate chances of miscommunication. Additionally, women in rural areas especially in African and Arab countries are faced with cultural communication barriers since they are not allowed to talk more in the presence of men.
The identified article in this analysis is Jefferson et al.’s (2013), “Effect of physicians’ gender on communication and consultation length: a systematic review and meta-analysis.” As the number of women joining the medical profession increase, the question of “whether male and female doctors communicate differently with patients are important and timely?” This article suggest that the traditional biological deterministic theories that hold that men and women are different due to biological sex differences are being replaced by those theories that suggest which suggest that behavioral differences between the genders are as a result of interaction between personal traits and cultural and social factors that affect both genders in different ways.
Communication that occur during medical consultations is crucial to the quality of care provided to the patients since it affects patient satisfaction and health outcomes. Consequently, communication style of the doctor influences the length of the consultation, which affects the rate of the overall activities of the clinical organization.
