Compared to all military concepts and activities, command and control is military’s most important concept. In contrast to a conventional understanding as a top-down, coercive management of subordinate activities and information, command and control is a broad concept ideally applied by exchanging commander-subordinate feedback in order to streamline information flows optimally and at greatest damage and harm to enemy (U.S. Marine Corps, 1996). To command and control, I have come to learn, is more about placing situations under a certain degree of control and under a commander’s command according to a negotiated pace, or tempo, whereby present and future activities are planned, executed, monitored and put to a desired close.
