Cognitive bias is listening, finding meaning in words, and happenings around us, in ways that do not go according to our thinking. It, in the end, sways our judgment and render our ideas null. In his book, The Oxford Handbook of Cognitive Science, Chipman (2017) posits that most of these biases arise from how people listen, their memories, and the kind of information they get. It must not be confused with logical fallacies where people tend to interpret data according to their thinking. There are several instances where cognitive biases appear, hence determining the type of bias spoken of. A few of the preferences identified in this research include confirmation bias, misinformation effect, and false-consensus effect. This essay analyses these three types of biases gives examples from real life from personal experiences.
In confirmation bias, people listen to others peaking about ideas they have about the world. It mostly appears for events, topics, and issues one has read about and has had much interest about. When listening to people speaking about ideas we know, we give a listening ear and avoid any interruptions. However, when we feel some misinformation, people give in and intone to the same ideas. I am a lover of technology, especially the new marketing trends that have been unveiled around the world. Listening to business people talk about their marketing interests me, and I give my time to it. I respond to these by either providing an opinion of what others have done, how well I feel it should be done, and the results one expects. It should be noted that the other people talking about the same topic will likely stick to their argument, so they leave with the satisfaction that their view was the best. It is more of a self-interest discussion where each person strives to provide a convincing answer to the items arising in the topic.
The misinformation effect is changing statements about events after they have happened. In most instances, we witness what happens in our hoods, places of stay, in social gatherings.
