Introduction
“Thousands have lived without love, but none without water.” It is a quote by Wystan Hugh Auden, a poet, describing how critical water is to life. Water is an essential commodity in the body of a human being to regulate temperature, flush out toxins, and quench thirst, among other uses, which have led to the growth of the bottled water businesses. Based on the MDPI journal, the bottled water market has grown over the years, accounting for 199 billion dollars globally by 2017, making it the second largest beverage market after carbonated drinks (Ballantine, Ozanne & Bayfield, 2019, pp. 1). Bottled water marketers have people believing that bottled water is magical water from their advertisements of pristine spring water, healthy people gulping the water and majestic mountain peaks where the water is supposed to originate. However, despite about two hundred billion dollars spent yearly worldwide on bottled water, people should avoid bottled water as it is unhealthy, it is not financially of value, it destroys the environment, causes the wastage of resources and takes attention away from public systems.

However, according to the National Resource Defense Council, bottled water is not required to be one hundred percent free of contaminants as it is in the case of tap water (Postman, 2016). Each water bottle is permitted to have a small dosage of coliform bacteria. However, after the water becomes bottled and stays in shelves for more than ten weeks, the bacteria begin to multiply imposing E. coli health risk to consumers. Also, researchers document that bottled water contains chemical contaminants. The treatment of bottled water sees bottled water companies treat their plastic bottles with chemical (Matanoski, 2017, Jan 6). Consequently, the chemicals leak from the bottles into the water making the water that has undergone filtration proc...
